Smarter movement and safer operations with Dyno’s solution for USL Medical

Discover how USL Medical Supplies partnered with Dyno in Auckland to implement a seamless conveyor system that boosted efficiency and safety in their fast-growing healthcare distribution business.

THE CHALLENGE

As USL Medical Supplies grew, they recognised the need to optimise their warehouse operations to meet increasing demand.

Supply Chain Manager Anthony Lane identified several key areas for improvement. A significant concern was the amount of walking staff undertook to process orders, impacting efficiency and potentially causing unnecessary strain. Additionally, the presence of numerous forklift and order picker trucks in packing and dispatch areas posed safety risks.

USL Medical also sought to refine their packing system, which handled a diverse range of items, from small, fast-moving products to much larger ones, catering to both large and small healthcare providers. The ultimate challenge was to maximise the utilisation of their vast warehouse space. To address this aspect, Dyno collaborated with Store Pro, the providers of USL Medical’s racking systems. While the conveyor technology itself was relatively straightforward, a deep understanding of USL Medical’s complex processes was crucial for the project’s success.

The Solution

Designing for reduced strain and increased output

Dyno worked closely with USL Medical to develop a conveyor system tailored to their specific needs and warehouse layout. The solution incorporated:

  • Tranzband (Lineshaft) Powered Roller Conveyor: This system provides efficient and controlled movement of a variety of product sizes and weights throughout the packing and dispatch areas.
  • Ezyroll Gravity Conveyor: Utilised in specific zones, this cost-effective solution allows for the smooth flow of goods using gravity, further optimising the material handling process.

The key to the project’s success was Dyno’s understanding of USL Medical’s intricate order processing system. By carefully analysing their workflows, Dyno designed a conveyor layout that significantly reduced travel distances for order pickers and minimised the need for forklift and order picker truck movements in key areas, thereby enhancing both efficiency and safety. The seamless integration of the conveyor system was a testament to the collaborative approach and Dyno’s professional execution.

The Result

Significant gains in efficiency and workplace safety achieved

This project demonstrates Dyno’s commitment to understanding the unique operational needs of their clients and delivering practical, effective solutions. By focusing on process understanding and collaboration, Dyno helped USL Medical Supplies achieve their goals of increased efficiency, improved safety, and better utilisation of their warehouse space, supporting their ambition to become a market leader in healthcare distribution.

The implementation of the Dyno-designed conveyor system has yielded significant positive outcomes for USL Medical Supplies.

  • Reduced staff strain

By minimising the distance staff need to walk to process orders, the system has reduced physical stress and improved overall well-being.

  • Increased efficiency

The streamlined flow of goods via the conveyor system has accelerated order processing and improved overall warehouse efficiency.

  • Enhanced workplace safety

The reduction in forklift and order picker truck traffic in packing and dispatch areas has created a safer working environment for staff.

  • Seamless integration

The implementation of the conveyor system was smooth and did not disrupt ongoing operations.

  • Future scalability

USL Medical is confident that the system can be extended in the future, and they intend to partner with Dyno for any such expansions.

Customer testimonial

"With Dyno, we have achieved the results that we were aiming for."

“USL Medical supplies both large and small healthcare products to New Zealand healthcare providers and patients. Our aim is to be the market leader in healthcare distribution. To achieve this we developed a purpose built warehouse in 2013 which allowed us to design a layout which would give us an increase in productivity and warehouse efficiencies. Part of the design was to implement a conveyor system which would reduce pickers travel time.

We chose Dyno for the conveyor design. From the initial meeting we felt confident that they understood what we wanted to achieve. The sales consultant was very professional in his dealing with us and never once tried to over complicate the design. The project was delivered on time, and the implementation of the conveyor was seamless. We have achieved the results that we were aiming for. If in the future we decide to extend the conveyor, we will definitely use Dyno to take care of our conveyor requirements.”
