THE CHALLENGE

Auckland-based Gala Berry, a company known for its high-quality strawberries, sought a new approach to packing and grading their produce.

Dyno collaborated closely with Gala Berry to develop a unique conveyor system that not only improved efficiency but also enhanced the visual grading process, leading to even higher quality standards.

Gala Berry, an innovator in the strawberry industry, recognised the need for a more effective way to handle the delicate process of packing and grading their premium fruit. They required a system that could optimise their workflow while ensuring the highest level of quality control.

Dyno was tasked with designing a solution that met Gala Berry’s specific requirements, including an efficient layout within their existing facility and a method for enhancing the visual grading process.

The Solution

Meeting unique needs with a custom conveyor system

Dyno’s design team worked in close partnership with Gala Berry to understand their precise needs and operational constraints. The result was a custom Minibelt conveyor system incorporating several innovative features:

  • Specially designed lighting: recognising that conventional lighting was inadequate for optimal visual grading, Dyno integrated fluorescent lights mounted on lightweight aluminium supports with powder-coated steel stands. This custom lighting solution provided the ideal illumination for accurate assessment of strawberry quality.
  • Stainless steel trays and jam chutes: these additions ensured efficient handling of both premium strawberries and any fruit destined for jam production.
  • VSD controllers: Variable Speed Drive (VSD) controllers allowed for precise management of conveyor speed, optimising the flow of strawberries through the grading and packing process.
  • Tracking strips: These strips kept punnets and individual strawberries separate on the conveyor, further enhancing efficiency and minimising potential damage to the fruit.
