Maximising Yield and Profit in Fruit Packhouses

Fruit packhouses demand gentle, high-speed handling – yes, we know, it sounds like an oxymoron, but it’s what we do day in, day out! Our conveyors move delicate fruit with minimal bruising, both in the pre-sorting process and in packing and post-pack systems.

Pre-sort
For fruit such as citrus and apples, our Dyno Chain fruit infeed system elevates fruit from water baths through to pre-sort, and on to the full grading/sorting systems. Fruit like kiwifruit moves on similar equipment for sorting (no water bath), and through soft sort belts to the graders.

Waste Fruit
Dyno has excellent options for waste or soft fruit removal, with special features to ensure conveyors don’t become contaminated even with soft and rotten fruit.

Post Sort
Automatic empty carton infeed conveyor systems (from box erector to packing machinery), crate transfers, box management, and palletising, along with other equipment, are managed by the Dyno team. This dramatically cuts labour for manual sorting, stacking, and palletising. Packhouses rely on our industry expertise to help achieve a higher yield, and in turn, greater profitability and ROI.

For smaller products such as berries, we have specialised systems integrating lighting to enhance visual inspection, along with features for waste and packed fruit. Other customisations are available to help growers increase throughput and quality.

Dyno has helped many packhouses achieve amazing results. One example is a tropical fruit packhouse: Dyno solved many issues with their first packhouse, which was capable of packing a maximum of 200 tonnes per day. As our customer grew, we scaled their systems to handle in excess of 300 tonnes a day with ease. Some of the equipment supplied included: water bath fruit infeed, empty carton infeed, and cushioned pack benches with integrated scales and full packed produce box outfeed to palletising. Fruit was cared for from tree to tray.

With this pleasing improvement in production, we then asked Dyno to revamp our Nectarine production line. We’d had a few safety issues such as hooks near the rollers and bits sticking out from the roller stands to catch peoples’ feet and cause tripping. When we told them our needs, they asked all the right questions to cover things we forgot to specify, such as left or right-side weighing. They figured everything out and provided a reliable quality solution – within a month. We got wider rollers, with powered and Xpandaroll’s the same width to avoid pinch points. Both sides of the grader line then had matching size to improve safety. They checked that we had all the relevant information to do the wiring and installation ourselves properly, including the right-sized motors etc.

Things are humming along smoothly now, and we can pull-out or put-away the conveyor as required – avoiding the previous heavy lifting of rollers. We’ve also got less people movement up-and-down the packhouse – making production tidier and safer. Dyno has been very good to work with and nothing is a problem for them. They really made sure that the whole system worked for us from concept to completion. Their agile response is amazing in such short timeframes. All in all, we’ve improved our efficiency while removing our worst safety issues.”
